Leman Russ Kartvelian Variant, Part 1: the cupola

First , thanks for the readers who are contesting in the Logo Design contest. Here you can find details and remember, the deadline for entry is in a couple of weeks; the winner gets a set of 5 25 mm resin bases PLUS a Leman Russ or Chimera from our huge collection.

Now on to other stuff. The Bishkek 2nd landed on the planet Kartvelian to help the stagnating Imperial forces defeat the unruly rebels. The first thing they did is get themselves a Leman Russ, Kartvelian Variant. It is a troop killer with a monstrous Punisher Gatling gun on the turret and heavy bolters on 3 spots. The Kartvelian Variant sports a round cupola which greatly improves the gunners vision. Here is how it was made:
I cut an big hole into the front. Then warmed up some plastic card and bent it into shape. After that a lot of fitting and cutting rivets.

The cupola has a hatch for quick entry or escape.
I made sure to add the hinges and make it look somewhat believable.
Here's the 'counts as' heavy bolter. The normal one wouldn't fit through such a thin slot.
It's crazy to look at the pictures and realize how bad it all looks while using plastic card, green stuff and super glue. Can't wait to primer this thing.

Over the coming weeks I would like to take you along in finishing this thing. My goal is to enter this vehicle in the Golden Bolter contest on Bolter and Chainsword(deadline Jan 31)

Next post: how to make your own Punisher Gun, easy and cheap!

  1. The hatch needs a handle, but other than that, it looks great.

  2. Thats a very cool and original conversion, it looks very bulky and unwieldy, thus very imperial! Great idea mate.

  3. Excellent cupola mate, I'm looking forward to getting into scratch building this year.

    What's coming in part 2?

  4. NemFX: my idea was that enemy troops don't have a way to get in and the hatch only has an handle on the inside. Since this is a close combat type tank, the hatch has to stay secure from grenades and other bad things.
sovietspace: whenever I play with a model, I always think the period between WWI and WWII when it comes to design.
Corbane: next post is the scratch built Punisher gun
    cheers

  5. I really like the cupola concept, and the fluff you'd written for it is rather intriguing! Can't wait to see it in all its glory!
