Warhammer 40K 25th Anniversary

I was browsing through the many fantastic articles on SC Warhammer and noticed that there was no tribute to Warhammer 40,ooo for the 25th Anniversary.

So here is my contribution - A pic of my original Archangels Space Marines from 1987-88 along with the Limited Edition Crimson Fist and 25th Anniversary pin. Enjoy!!!

Critter Commandos

I spend most of my hobby time painting dark gritty miniatures in the "grimdark" style. Well sometimes I need a break. A few months ago at a local gaming convention I was introduced to a whimsical game called "Critter Commandos" which just oozes fun. The game is no longer being published, but with a little searching I was able to get my hands on a rulebook and a couple dozen models.

Critter Commandos is a miniatures game that is done in the style of a Saturday morning cartoon. The critters fight each other with amusing weapons until the enemy has had so many "holes" blasted through their bodies that they fall apart only to reappear in the next episode.
Here are the first couple models that I painted. These critters are from the Frog Federation, the main protagonists in the universe. They are at perpetual war with the evil Ratzis (Rat Nazis if that wasn't clear). In order to mimic children's cartoons in style I painted them with bright solid colors with only a minimum of shading and highlighting. The guy on the left is a frog in power armor with grenades (yes it is a pineapple), and the one on the right is a frog in deluxe armor with a flame thrower (a hairdryer).
I really enjoy these miniatures. They have a great sense of humor, and these are not even the silliest models (my favorite is Duck Vader but I have not been able to find a copy). The only thing I don't like is the integral bases, but that is not a major complaint. Living in the San Francisco Bay area we are lucky to have a large gaming community with lots of gamers, hobbyists, stores, and regular conventions, but where ever you live be sure to make an effort to meet other gamers and check out what they are into. You just might find something cool that inspires you.

Space Wolves: the Wolf Wing Army list

I finalized my Wolf Wing army list over the last 3 days and, being full of inspiration, modeled the remaining models of my army. It is now completely built, barring one model which is not complete yet (see below).
I invite all of you to check it out and let me know what you think. Remember, I am a modeler first and gamer second, but I still think this is a cool Wolf Wing list.

Here's the army shot with the 4 units and two transports. The total pointcost is 1600, so there is some room to add to get to 1750.  My main inspiration comes from the Space Wolves blog.

Let's start with Squad 1

Logan Grimnar
2x term with thunderhammer and stormshield
1x term with chainfist and storm bolter
1x terminator with cyclone missile launcher, stormbolter and powerfist
total points: 527

(I still need a Cyclone Missile Launcher and will hopefully get one soon)

Squad 2

Arjac Rockfist
2x term with combi melta and powerweapon
1x term with chainfist and assault cannon
1x term with powerfist and stormbolter
total points: 370

Squad 3

1 x term with stormbolter and powerweapon
1 x term with stormbolter and chainfist
1x term with powerfist and cyclone missile launcher
2x term with stormbolter and powerfist
1x term with thunderhammer and lightning claw
total points: 293

Squad 4

1x Lone wolf with lightning claw, stormshield, mark of the wulfen
2x fenrisian wolves (haven't gotten those yet)
total points: 106

Transports:
Landraider  points: 250
Drop Pod with missile launcher: 55 points

As you can see, I tried to have fun modeling with the terminators. I have been creating bears, moustaches and braids using this tutorial from From the Warp.

I have been modeling my wolves'bears after this guy, our local hero:
here are some guys up close

That's it! Hope you enjoyed it and let me know what you think. And again, make sure to check out The Space Wolves Blog, it's my bible for anything serious about the wolves!

And check us out on Facebook. Search Santa Cruz Warhammer. We love little, impromptu snapshots of everybody's work. We already have readers from Poland and England that throw on some stuff once in a while. Invite yourself!

And a nice new little section, videos! We wont post many, and not even every week but this week, we do! Here is a nice close up look at the new FW Zone Mortalis set. We are looking forward to what he will do with them and if he will take the stained glass route with the archways.

ZONE MORTALIS SET ~ Forge World. Starting the project ~ Part 1.

MWC Crew: Rust and the City sure has nailed the Nurgle work and then brought it forward in a simple and very effective manner. Well done champ!! We see Heresy Workshop is still on a roll with the, what must now be massive, 'Merican' Guard force. These most recent additions show no drop in the quality and level of detail put into every model. If your in the mood for some of the most striking paint jobs ive seen in a long time, stop by and check out James work. Its way more then just power armor!

And finally, if you like dinos, dioramas and LED's stop by the Wilderness Camp!

Space Wolves: rebuilding the OOP Land Raider

Last week I posted about this picture below. In a few trades I was able to get two OOP Land Raiders and one modern one. I have now converted one of the old ones into a 'refurbished' Raider, suited for my budding Wolf Wing army. This post is picture heavy and is just a quick run through in how to convert an old model into something new.
As you can see below, I completely took the old model apart. That is not easy to do without damaging the model. This one had been together for 20 years or so.
I was able to demolish it without incident, this is what these things look like

After that I cut out the existing doors and added a ornamental panel  from Scribor Miniatures (Celtic range)

I wanted to magetize a modern set of Lascannons on the size, like below

I glued the old doors on the inside at the right distance from where the sponsons would go in, like so

Then I added a magnet or two, facing out.
On the back of the sponsons I used adhesive magnet from Galeforce Nine

After closing up the tank, it looks like this:

My plan was to have all weapons magnetized for all three variants. I have collected lascannons, hurricane bolters and flamestorm cannons. It still need to get two extra sponsons, so I can attach the primary weapons to each one permanently.

For the secondary weapons I added magnetic adhesive to the two little compartments on the front fender. I magnetized two assaultcannons and two heavy bolters and can easily swap them out. Below all of the weapons are shown:

And here they are all one there, for the picture.

 I primed it blue
and went to work with oil paints...
Update coming up next week! Hope this inspires. join the conversation on our facebook page: look for santa cruz warhammer and join!

Welcome to the SCWH Honor Roll now brought to you with extra spine tingling fun, direct from the MWC Crew, from over at MWC (duh!) ! Hello, fellow Readers! Lantz has gotten a bit busy in the real world so the rest of the crew will be helping fill his shoes with the most spine tingling links from across the blog-o-sphere that we find each week! While we wont be as awesome as Lantz was at first, we will most certainly get used to the spotlight!

Warhammer in Progress - GUO / Ku'Gath - Skaven Hell Pit Kit Bash
Heresy Workshop - Merican Lancers Drop Sentinel
Dukes Inferno - Custodes Update
Feralique - Zombie Pirate Deckhands
Apocalypse 40k Daily Buzz - Ork Blasta Bomba Scratchbuild

And a nice new little section, videos! We wont post many, and not even every week but this week we found a nice one that goes well with Dukes Inferno update above!

Scibor Custode Head Review

MWC Crew:I must admit the Ork Bomba Scratch build is truly a work of art in building something from nothing and making it look like a real kit! Dukes Custodes are a true work of art with those Power Weapons. They are probably the most detailed OSL lit swords I've seen in a very long time! Expect twice as many awesome links next week as we really get into the groove of the Honor Roll!

Iron Hands FTW project.

Here are some pics of my take on an Iron Hands marine. Check out FTW to see Rons work on this months Model Masterclass project.

This month Ron chose for us to build up an Iron Hands marine with bionics. Here is my first mock up with the whimpy Necron leg.

Unhappy with the whimpy leg, I dug out an old hacked up version of this model and stole his bionic leg.

I also went online and printed out these shoulder pad images to have on the workbench while greenstuffing the model.
and here he is in the green before paint

After that black paint with grey highlights, with a few washes of black over the top to knock the contrast down and add some depth to the bionics.

I also used red for the lenses and base for some color and contrast.

Next month we will be taking on a pre heresy Death Guard Assault Marine. More on that soon.....

Space Wolves: an update!

Through a couple of trades I was able to get two original Landraiders and one modern one. Having the old vehicles sit on my desk  really inspired me to think about 40K again and also helped me finish my gunner unit for my Defenders of Makkum (about which I will post some other time).

I dismantled  one of the landraiders, very carefully and with lots of respect. The previous owner had them since he was 15, so I certainly wanted to do the age of the model respect. Anyway, my goal is to replace the weapons with magnetized lasguns, up and down, not side by side.

John built one of them a while back...

but I prefer the guns to be really embedded in the frame of the tank, not hanging on the side. So I removed the lascannons from the modern raider including the frame work around it. Then I cut out the original LR door and plan to drop a magnetized and rebuilt lasgun battery in that spot.

I also found a spacewolf icon for a tank and that fit nicely on the left of the tank. Obviously this tank needs a lot of decking out anyway, since this one was in pretty bad shape.

Very excited about all this and yes, in the meantime I am painting up my 6 termie for the 17 model-strong Wolfwing.

wow!

By the way, come visit us on facebook, look for santa cruz warhammer and drop us a line so we can add you the group. Lots of people are adding little things that are great fun!

SCWH Honor Roll #53

Welcome to the SCWH Honor Roll now brought to you with love and care direct from Lantz from over at TLA and MWC! Hello, readers. I'm sad to announce this will be my last Honor Roll for a while. Some real life happenings are going on and I just won't have the time to commit to the Honor Roll. Fear not, next week Matt from MWC will be taking over to fill my absence. It's been an honor to write for SCW, no pun intended, and it's been a fun experience. So let's get to this week's list.
(thanks Lantz for doing such a great job. I think I can talk for everyone when I say the Honor Roll has been very succesful in showing people the consistently high quality of the work put out by our readers!
Mike)

A Guardsman's Guide To Glory - Heretic's Bane WIP
Duende - Mulg WIP
Ricalopia - Deathjack Complete
The Butcher's Bill - The Great Unclean One Complete
Gone to Ground - Fire of Salvation WIP
The Beard Bunker - Freehand Painting Tutorial
Die Vincis - The Canyon Complete (translated to English)
Apocalypse 40k - Necron Conversions

Lantz: A plethora of great work this week. The one that really blew me away was A40k's Necron vehicle conversions; those are phenomenal. TBB has a very interesting tutorial for freehand painting that's definitely worth a look. DV has been working vigorously on "The Canyon" and it's finally complete. Finally, AGGTG has an apocalypse terrain piece that's stunning; can't wait to see this thing finished.

Mike's addition for this week's Honor roll is:

Mike:  I would love to steer everyone to our new Facebook Bulletin Board. Our group is open to anyone and after becoming a member, you can post interesting stuff there. Check it out here.
