None of my pieces t...Let me answer your questions. None of my pieces that are photographed are sealed. It does not rub off easily. That being said you can scrape it off if you really try with something hard like a knife or your fingernail. If you have matte sealant in would not hurt to use it but I would not run out to buy it just for this purpose. There are no problems with painting over the rust.
