Here's my Nurgle Lord. I painted him up in a couple of evenings. He was a joy to paint and this model is already becoming a real classic (sculpt by Brian Nelson), being painted by plenty of people, even if they don't have a Chaos Army
After painting, I happily dropped him on my Cool Mini or Not page. Just to let you know: getting a 7 there is great and I mostly get between 6 and 6.5, although a couple of times I went much higher. Anyway, after dropping it on there, I was bummed to see people are rating the model below 6, which is table top standard.
And that I don't understand. Of course I am not a propainter and all that, but the system on CMON just doesn't work very well, certainly not for middle of the road painters like me. I want all of you to go there and give me an HONEST vote. I am not looking for 7's and 8's, but I pretend that I should be better than 5's. Or not? Bring me into reality please. And again, i think you all know me long enough I am not looking good news only. I am just a little frustrated with the voting system on CMON for all the normal people, not the stars.
As a fun little extra, both Sc John and Michael from SCWH have painted up this model and I wanted to show off their nice models as well. Enjoy!

I think all of the SCWH writers will have to paint up one of these, as a fun blog project.
Looks pretty darn good to me Mike. I like the color gradient on the axe.
ReplyDeleteCMoN is puzzling to me a lot of the time, this being one of them. Clearly this is solidly above tabletop quality. I dunno, I have a CMoN gallery up as well and some of my stuff gets surprisingly high marks (for what I was expecting) but then some of the stuff I really try to go the extra mile on gets terribly low marks.
ReplyDeleteAs for the SCWH writers painting one of these up? Heck yeah, I'm in!
You shouldn't worry too much about CMON ratings, looks like some people have a lot of time on their hands and nothing better to do than snipe at all kinds of minis.
ReplyDeleteSadly this website has changed and not for the best. It's still a solid compilation of beautiful minis, but ratings are now meaningless to me.
I love this mini and was considering using one as a chaos warrior for a Bloodbowl team. Your rendition is beautiful, I especially like the disgusting parts, guts and boils, ewww!
It's a great sculpt and you've done a fine job painting it up. I've found that once you get past "tabletop" quality, you start to get into personal opinions when it comes to what is good and what is not.
ReplyDeleteBe proud of this guy and don't sweat the CMON rating.

Reposting multiple times keeps you at the top of blogrolls. I hope that isn't your motivation.
ReplyDeleteanonymous: actually, it is. Just in a sense that when I post at 10 or 11 at night, the rest of the us is already asleep. In europe, they would just get up so they can catch it on the way to work.
ReplyDeleteNext morning I throw it on at 7 or 8 so readers in the us can check it.
The blogrolls are so insanely full of blog that post twice a day without saying much of anything. Blogs like SCWH who want to start conversations or inspire always snow under. On top of the blogroll means nothing. it's a moment, an hour later there will be 20 new posts.
Critical comments are great but make sure to leave your name

Poison-pen time:
ReplyDeleteI think if you look at (for me) the best version of this miniature by Darren Latham, the differences are pretty clear:
http://razzaminipainting.blogspot.com/2011/09/hes-one-ugly.html
The smoothness of the blending (armour and skin tones), and the contrast in colours (pink vs. dark green; or the black/blue intestines). Sharper highlights on edges of armour. Contrast between the armour (green) and horns (ivory). The turquoise and sienna hues on the axe.
Photography as well: a slightly gloomier background might make the figure more characterful and atmospheric.
That said, I really like the John Blanche-esque dirtiness. He has discussed his approach on another blog, which you might like:

Hope that helps.
I have given up on CMON because of the ridiculous votes. That paint job is superb, well done.
