I wanted to tackle Tom Meier's Frost Giant for ages now but never had a good plan for it. But after creating a few small box dioramas with older Citadel miniatures, I finally had the courage to create something with this very cool 1977 miniature (sculpted by Tom in his teens!).
I decided right away that I wanted to create a really green forest scene with the Giant and his little buddy. I imagined the scene as 'Fellow Travelers' and knew that I wanted the Giant, a little dog, a path, some trees and rocks. Here's how I built it:
I found an old frame in an antique shop that is about 4x5 inches. I removed all the backing and created a 1.5 inch plastic card box.
After fitting it, I started building some elevation with cork. I am filling the left side with the terrain, planning the giant on the right.
In the local park I found some branches that could look like trees. I started fitting them and made sure most of the trees are placed on angles except the left front one which will 'frame' the scene. After that I added green stuff to fill in gaps and create a bottom to add a sand mixture.
Adding the sand mixture
Now the test fitting with the giant and some old flock to get an idea if this will work
This whole part went pretty quickly but the next phase took a lot longer, painting the scene, come up with different tints for the trees, working out the foliage and adding grass, leaves and bushes in a realistic way. I definitely wanted it to be really green and lush, contrasting the Frost Giant with coolish toned outfit. I used a mixture of old flock, lichen, actually birch leaves, some synthetic foilage and a static grass mixture.
And after painting the wonderful mini, my favorite moment is to place the mini into the scene!
Hope this inspires! Try one yourself!
