'The Rot Inside' - Another Oldhammer Box Diorama!

I had an idea to create a scene that shows our society's general apathy to bad things happening here or abroad and of course I include myself in that group as well. Sure, I follow the news and have opinions, but in the end I just want a comfortable, quiet life. I thought creating a box with the name 'The Rot Inside" should help me stay 'awake' and enjoy some Oldhammering in the meantime.

Here's the concept I started with. I had an old 5x7 frame laying around and threw in a bunch of minis to see if the visual could work. I always wanted to use the 1988 Marauder Citizens by Trish Carden for the top. I also knew I wanted a melee of bodies crawling up, but how to go about it, I didn't really know.

Here's the early build with cork and a tree I didn't use in the end.

The cave like bottom was made more rocky using spackle and I added a few hidden skulls as well

After looking at my minis and talking to my buddy John, he gave me some plastic Aly Morrison Zombies from 1999. They would allow me to be more flexible with the positioning by cutting them up and making them look more active. After I sorted that part out the rest of the scene came together quickly. As usual the plastic box is made from a FOR SALE sign from the local hardware store, and I made a box with 1.5 inch depth.

There are a lot of minis in the bottom part including some ghouls sculpted by Paul Muller in 1998 and of course some metal zombies done by the great Gary Morely in 1992. It had to be pretty packed to make the scene work, I think I fitted about 11 or 12 minis in that group.

Here's the scene primed - I knew I wanted to go pretty dark blue on the bottom part so I gave it a bit of a zenithal highlight with a spray can.

After the bottom was realized, the rest came naturally, with a bright blue sky and lots of greenery to contrast the bottom half of the frame.

And here's the finished scene!

and some details!

Hope this inspires!
