Why does disaster always happen to me?/Krieg Project part 1

My modeling cabinet is in the kitchen, high enough that no one in the family wants to use it this space. I have been using this spot for four years now but for some reason, I keep dropping models right at that spot. Every other model drops 5 feet to the ground, shattering into pieces. I rummage around, looking for some stuff and bonk, there drops another model. Half the time, it's the actual model I am building, working hard at another cool conversion or whatever, I am happily admiring progress when suddenly it slips from my fingers....a you tube video would see me desperately trying to keep ahold of it, only making it's flight path even unpredictable and uncatchable.

This is what happened this morning. After building my first Knight of Bal Timorean, I decided to build another one. I had finished the complex kitbash and already basecoated all the different colors, incl a wash. And then:

It is so disheartening and really, really dissapointing. You work so hard on bring an idea to life and everyone knows that gluing metal, resing and plastic together can be really frustrating. My wife knows all this by now and I only have to look through my teary eyes at her for a hug, damn I hate this cabinet!

OK, moving on. Here's my other baby project: Death Korps of Krieg Mole Launcher team clears out enemy bunker. The bunker is getting there...

It looks kind of messy right now because of the spackle but I am going to sand it down in the spots where it spilled. Still have to make sandbags out of green stuff.

My wife made me some barbed wire from beading wire. She wrapped two pieces around each other and then made the little loops that she cut short to look like barbs.

Mike's Knight of Bal Timorea, part 5: it's done!

Well, first I have to say that John is all mad at me. The reason is simple. He started out this project hoping that we would inspire a bunch of modelers to paint up a knight. Then all the knights would go into a big bag and out of all the participants we would draw a winner who would get the whole lot.

But the project didn't attract too much attention and along the way I decided that I would just model a cool knight on a massive, diorame like base, completely not fit for an army AND on top of that I liked him so much that I told John I actually couldn't give him up anymore, more so after I painted my treasure Dutch Citizenship symbols onto the shields...

I guess I will have to paint up another knight for the project, but we better get some more participants..

Anyway, here is "The Disillusioned Knight from the Netherlands comes back from the Orc Wars with his trusted but grumpy Knave"

Santa Cruz Warhammer Game Night 2 = More Success!

Even with some wet weather we had a decent turnout at the community center.

Two tables of 40k, a table of Fantasy, some Wings of War and a bit of Settlers of Catan.

Some old faces and also some new ones.

Santa Cruz Warhammer Game Night 2

Has it been a month already?

With the resounding success of the first Santa Cruz Warhammer Local Game Night, we just had to keep it rolling and this Friday Oct 22nd we will be at it again.

Come down and play or just to check it out and meet some folks, this is a family friendly event for all, bring an army or just show up and play one of the demo games.

Mike will have Settlers of Catan and I will bring Wings of War WWI for open gaming.

There will be tables provided for Warhammer Fantasy and 40k, bring 1000pts of your favorite army to play a quick game against other locals.

GameALot has rented the room next door and will have a Magic card event running at the same time.

Please feel free to bring something to show off, a game to play, or something to share.

We will have the room from 5:30 for set up with games starting around 6 and we will start to clean up at 9 to be out by 9:30

This is a great chance to get out and meet some other gamers from the area and make some new friends.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone again, and some new faces as well, so see you there!

Mike's Knight of Bal Timorea, part 4

After weeks of work on this model, it's slowly coming to fruition; painting the knight and placing him on his horse was very satisfying. As you all know, I wanted a knight who lost faith in the endless wars that the Bretonnian Lords are involved in and my idea was to have him ride back from another battle. Pondering countless lost comrades, he peers over the foggy lands, wondering why life went the way it did..

He has a scar on his forehead and his armour is old, battered and rusty.

Here is the post that explains the mish mash of bitz from Fantasy and 40K to make him look believable. The metal IG head set is awesome for bareheaded knights.

Next up the servant carrying his lance who will be walking next to him.

Mike's Knight of Bal Timorea, part 3

Here's some progress on the horse. I totally MESSED up my version of the decals, mostly because I tried it with clear decal paper which seems totally useless to me. I needed the paper with the white background but our local stores don't sell this, only on order, so no help there. I created this file in photoshop and printed it on the paper, glossed it with hardcoat, but when I put it on, I couldn't see it!

It is still a good way to make your own decals, using google images and some photoshop. Just make sure the resolution of the masterfile (size of your decalsheet) is the same as the little images your drop in.

Anyway, moving on, I decided to paint the 4 shields:

Black with White Lion and Red White and Blue: flag of my country of birth: the Netherlands

The other side:

Red harts with Blue Stripes: flag of the Dutch Province Friesland, where my family's roots are. I did taken creative liberty with the angle of the stripes, I like them better pointing towards the rider instead the orginal position as seen in the flag:

Red and White blocks: flag of the Dutch Province of Brabant, where I finished college and lived with my wife, before moving to the States.

All in all, it's really fun to make the knight fight for the places and lands that you come from, it made me a little sentimental...

The lion looks like crap, but I don't have any decals for it.

Santa Cruz Warhammer 2nd Game Night!

Friends, we have set the date for the 2nd Santa Cruz Warhammer Gamenight: October 22nd from 5.30 to 9.30 at the Louden Nelson Center in Downtown Santa Cruz. Here's the flyer for it:

Print it out and hand one to your friends. The 1st Game Night was a smashing success and we are so happy to do it again.

Here are the details of this evening:

Fantasy and 40K Players: bring smallish armies, 1000 points at the most. We ran out of room last time and will be building smaller tables. Also, this way you might get in two games and give everyone a chance to play.

Orks

Mike (SCWH) will be bringing his Ork Army for display and playing purposes, anyone without an army can use that.

Wings of War

John will be hosting a table of Wings Of War which everyone should try out, it's great fun! Game A Lot's Frank carries the game so you can check out the models in his store on Front Street.

Settlers of Catan

Mike will be running a game of Settlers of Catan (yes, it's Mark Zuckerberg's favorite game). it's totally addictive and playable for all ages. I play it with my 6 and 11 year old daughters, but adults only makes it a real nailbiter. Come try it out. Game A Lot carries that game as well.

Anyway, all of this is just to have gamers find each other, meet someone new and have a great time!

Mike's Knight of Bal Timorea, part 2

Hey! Where are all our fellow Knights of Bal Timorea? Wait, we are trying to inspire you all to paint up a knight for this wonderful idea that John had a while back. Click here for the details.

Anyway, here's the horse. I went for orange as the main color. My family doesn't have a weapon and I am an immigrant from the Netherlands, so I figured it should be the color of the Dutch Royal Family, which is orange.

So I figure I will try to make the lion white on the black background. I am trying to paint it, but maybe I will use the Santa Cruz Warhammer way with photoshop and decals to make this work

I have a lot of fun painting this model, definitely out of my comfortzone (which is good once in a while) and I am trying the go for the ragged and worn look. Blending up top and glazing on the dirty parts of the cloth, trying to bring down highlights in a realistic way. The rest of the horse hasn't been weathered yet, the hooves definitely need more dirt etc.

All in all I am having fun (and so could you!)

Knights of Bal Timorea - John's Heraldry Ideas

I have always had an interest in heraldry, so I figured I would look into my family's past for some heraldry for my model.

The Dickerman Family Crest

I figured I would try to paint it by hand, but the three tiny Half lions rampant were going to be really small, so I figured I would search around on the internet for some tiny heraldry icon decals that I could add to my freehand.

In my searching I came across Citadel Six. Geoff makes custom made to order decal sheets designed to fit GW Bretonnians. He was very helpful and worked with me to figure out what I would end up using.

I sent him my Father's Family crest and my Mother's family crest as I had the idea of marshaling or combining them. I was advised that the details would be tough to see at that scale so I decided to use my Fathers Family crest, but also add some of my Mom's to the decal sheets for future projects, I was so impressed with the quality that I decided to add some decals for foot troops also.

Here is my horse with some paint and barding in The Dickerman family livery of red and yellow.

I painted the shields white to prep them for the decals

I also laid down some Ard Koteon the shields to make it glossy for the decal area to be nice and smooth.

Santa Cruz Warhammer has started the preparations for a super secret, MASSIVE project, that will be revealed in the spring on 2011.
