Nurgle Death Guard Raptor Test Model

I have to admit that I never intended to have a unit of these guys, until I read an interesting post at Imperius Dominatus.

While this may not be very fluffy for my Nurgle themed army, I liked his idea of 5 Raptors with two meltas as tank hunters.

I didn't think the metal raptors would fit in well with my Forge World Death Guard, so I dug around looking for loyalist jump packs (which I have a ton of) but instead I found a box of MaxMini jump packs.

I used a set of loyalist assault legs that I hit with my frog skinning technique , one of the Forge World Death Guard torsos with belly, Chaos assaulty arms, and threw down some Nurgly green paint. I will be using the shoulder pad with the fly on them for this squad.

Hope you like him, also here is a sneak peek of a sculpt I am doing for an epic project we have been scheming around with behind your backs.

We will be revealing it with our next post June 1st, and you do not want to miss it. I dare say it may be the greatest hobby project we have undertaken, ever.

stay tuned......

We have a winner!

Another Santa Cruz Warhammer Give Away Winner!

My eldest daughter went to www.random.org and generated number 23, which was:

Grey Death!
He will get this amazing model sent to him! Let's hope he will keep us uptodate on what he's doing with it. Grey Death, send me a line at mike.tess@charter.net with your info.

Thanks all of you for leaving comments. There are so many fans of Seth out there, that I have decided to paint up this guy and Lemartes as well. These 4 models, all done by Juan Diaz, are brilliant. Diaz also did the boss of the White Scars, which is an awesome model as well. Check out Diaz!

Quick and Easy Dollar Store Cat Bowl Outpost.

I was fumbling around the house and the new kitten would not stop crying, I followed her and she lead me to an empty bowl .

While filling it up, I realized without cat food in it, the bowl was just about the right height and size for a Space Marine squad to hide in for cover. I needed to go by the post office, and the dollar store was close, so I dropped in to grab some cheap supplies.

For just $3.00 I picked up a pair of stacked plastic bowls, the Garfield cat bowl, and a little stack of clear plastic party cake plates.

I set the cat bowl on top of an over turned plastic bowl and glued them together with hot glue. I added an old rhino side hatch for access to the observation deck.

and a Land Raider hatch and video screen from a Rhino interior, all from the bits box, then painted with black primer.

for the canopy, I masked off the outside edge to keep it clear, sanded the top and primered it also.

I sprayed a desert yellow over the primer, leaving a bit of black showing in a mottled pattern.

After everything had dried, I removed the masking tape to reveal the clear plastic edge.

I drilled three holes, and added three pegs of round plastic sprue to hold up the canopy, but didn't glue it so I can get in there to place figures.

Here a Death Guardsman looks out from the observation deck.

Next, I just hit it with a bit of wash and picked out some details on the hatches.

here is the finished glamour shot.

That was about as simple as it gets, it took only a few hours from start to finish (mostly paint drying) and a non gaming friend said it looked like a building from Mos Eisley in Star Wars, so I guess it passed muster.

Hope you like it,

John

Getting the Most from the Land Speeder

For me the Land Speeder has always been a love hate kind of thing.

I think the look is very cool, but the model kit has some issues. The first thing that comes to mind, is the seams at the "cheeks" also the general fit and finish isn't that great. Usually I just slap the thing together, throw some paint on it and call it done, but this time I was building it for a special project, and wanted to do it right.

I started modeling with armored vehicles, and then model cars and along the way, I have learned a few tricks, that I thought I should try to make this a nice clean build.

I also decided that I would like to try and get the most of the weapons load out, so I will make some modifications to have multiple weapon choices.

I used only liquid plastic cement, which actually fuses the plastic parts together, so when this is dry it will be rugged, more or less a solid piece of plastic. I gave the cheek seams special attention and made sure it all lined up as good as it would, used rubber bands to hold it all together, until the plastic glue dried, and used spot putty brushed smooth with liquid plastic cement to fill all the seams and blend it all together.

I never liked the little steps on the sides or the grab bar on the gunner side, I have spent some time in the military and these items seem out of place on a combat vehicle, and these are super human Space Marines, granny steps are unnecessary, so I removed all that and filled holes with spot putty.

The missile launchers, side hatch doors, assault cannon/spotlight unit, and the antennae array are all from the Ravenwing sprue. I placed magnets in the hatches to hold the missile launchers on as well as under the chin to hold on the assault cannon, the melta and heavy bloter have a long brass pin to fit snug into a pintle mount for the gunner.

You will see more of this soon.

the Bishkek 2nd Tauros Venator, Part 4: ending with the family shot

Well, that Venator is done! I painted the crew and gave it a spot in the cramped quarters where the Bishkek hang out when they are not active. Here are the final images:

the Bishkek 2nd Tauros Venator, Part 3: the Paint Job!

After the build was done, I happily grabbed the paints and started throwing it on and not in a subtle manner. I am getting a bit more confident with my heavy handed method which mostly consists out of basecoating, heavy washing and countless drybrushing mixed with more washes. My tip: initially wash everything with Devlan Mud, but finishing up use lots of Badab Black. Here are the images:
The other side:
here are some details:
and the back. The guns swivel and can be taken off in case of the successful hit
Here's a family shot of the Battery Pack, the mount and the guns. The battery is now glued in
Top without the guns
And the profiles:

Still haven't heard about the rules for this vehicle..does anyone know about them?
Let me know!

Final part is coming up next week, including a family picture!

the Bishkek 2nd Tauros Venator, Part 2: giving it character

I have been able to do some more work on the Venator, building it up with details that make it more real.
Here's a mocked up version of the finished build. The lasgun-to-battery connection can not be put together before painting, so the gun is sitting a big higher then what it will be in the end. You get the idea.
I added lots of jerry cans since this is a scout vehicle and should be able to be in the field for a long time. It built a side compartment for it, using dental floss for holding bands.
Here's a closer look at the driver. He is kitbashed from 3 or 4 different parts, the head is a resin desert head from the Santa Cruz Warhammer model line, something John has been working on for my army. Notice the little foot step, little details make it fun.

Here's the drivers compartment sans driver. I had to rebuild the steering section and bring it closer to the driver, the 1/35 scale being a little big for our little guy. And in the passenger side: more gasoline!
Here's the back of the on board voxcaster with the double wide back fenders and more gasoline. i also added a tow hook. The guy in the back is a Tallarn Heavy Bolter team helper, who is looking out, holding on and looking out.
Here he is. Also note some regular details like blankets and shovels. Don't just put them on because, try to find logical spots for them.
The big blanket on the side is a camo screen that is attached to the frame of the vehicle and can be pulled over the entire armament by a team of two in a matter of minutes. it's an old bit from a Tamiya M113 (1/35)

Ending on a interesting note: here's a desert vehicle Navy Seals use; its called the DPV..see where Forgeworld gets their ideas?

Didn't get that email with the rules for the Tauros Venator...didn't anyone buy that new book yet?

For you late comers: here's Part 1 of this series
Mike
