Barter Bucket: Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Welcome to the Santa Cruz Warhammer Barter Bucket v2.0! The Barter Bucket now has over a full month under its belt, and it continues to grow. We need your help though to spread the word on your own blogs, the details are here, and for an excellent tutorial to barter bucketing, check this guide out!

I'm your host, Mik of the blog, Mik's Minis. I came up with the idea of the bucket to be all about gamers helping gamers. I'm very excited it has found a place to call home here at Santa Cruz Warhammer.

The ground rules are pretty simple. You send me an email of what you are looking for, need, or just looking to get rid of to "miksminis@gmail.com", make sure it's in list form with plenty of detail. I will then post the requests here weekly each Saturday morning at Santa Cruz Warhammer. Please have your emails to me by no later than the Thursday of that week so I have enough time to compile everything.

If you see an item below you are interested in, or can help someone else out with, please contact the individual directly via their email address. Now, on to this week's bucket!

Penal Legion Squad

I did a test model for these guys a while back, you can see him here.

Sometimes it takes me a real long time to go back and make more of the test mode4ls and build a unit from them, so I have been making an effort to finish up some of the older projects, so here is the finished 9 man squad.

These are recycled Catachan with Pig Iron heads and Cadian arms. Orange jumpsuits were painted over Yanden Darksun foundation, flak vests are OD with highlights.

Here is a Penal trooper with an Ardwick 23rd trooper, I think that the different bodies and heads still look good together.

I am working on the 10th figure, who will be the Custodian. He will wear the normal green uniform of the Ardwick 23rd.

Hope you like them,

John

How to photograph your model, Cruzers style; UPDATED

When I am not hanging out with the family or paint my models, I am busy with photography. I manage a few photostores and work as a wedding photographer through the year. Needless to say I value a decent photo of a model. But when it comes to my own models I am shamefully lazy. While John goes out and buys lights and special bulbs, I prefer to do it quick and dirty. So here is my tutorial on how to photograph a model.

1. find a six year old who can bend a piece of paper
2. place your model on the paper

3. aim your flash to the ceiling and take the picture.
4. resize it in photoshop and bring up the white levels a little if you caught a dark day.

UPDATED with info for readers with point and shoot digitals

If you use a point and shoot digital, make sure of two things:
1. have window light (not direct sun) fall on your model, turn the flash off

OR

2. turn the flash to fill so it brings down the output. Put the background as far away behind the model as possible to avoid shadows. Pretty much all my WIP i shoot with a little digital that way, saving the big one for work thats done.

Here are some models I am working on that I shot all in one go.

My regimental adviser
I have been loving the white primer with Devlan mud washes. It works great to start off a model with. Very inspiring to see all the details.
my new astropath
and a catachan sergeant that John had six of, so he gave me one. I actually think it will look good in the Bishkek 2nd. i did remove his bare belly and made him a bullit proof vest.
What I am really enjoying is making these title images for new posts, working with multiple layers, filters and added imagery. Here's my latest one. more on him next time!

The Grande Old Dame from the Kalmyk Zone, Part 2

Ok, the Kalmyk 1st tank is finished and moved into it's rightful spot in the Bishkek glass cabinet. Here are the images. First let's backtrack (check here for the 1st post).

start
after weathering with hairspray
finished up
The tank commander is actually an oop model that came with the special Russ for the Catachans. I painted his skin brown to make it look like he's wearing a jacket.
and the back
I really looked at this tank as an experiment with crazy weathering and in that respect it came out nice. I didn't have the stamina to make this into a really good finished up model, taking care of all the details like I did on all the other Bishkek vehicles. Nevertheless I am happy with how it looks right now. It will do a fine job rallying the Kalmyk troopers in their new Bishkek regiment.

Goin' Rogue Part 3: the Big Boy wants to play

Through the Barter Bucket (see our column on the right) I received a bag of OOP Imperial Guard. In it was a half mauled OOP Ogryn. It was the really ugly one with the minotaur head. Now, I love the old school Guard, but this model is not pretty. Besides the comical design, the cast was terrible and it had lots of problems that I really didn't want to deal with, mostly on his face.
So I made him wear a head scarf and goggles to protect himself from the desert sand. Green stuff is not my strong point (I would love to take a class somewhere; when is Dave Taylor coming over to the Bay Area for a clinic?) The sigar is also green stuffed as is the left lower arm and glove that holds the cannon.
The cannon is from a Dwarfen forge. I added lots of bags and pouches and the Ork Grenade.
By bending his legs I gave him an improbably dynamic pose that looks great on the battlefield!
Anyway, despite that this model looks rough and dirty, I am glad that the Bishkek 2nd now has it's own Big Boy, a child at heart but woe the foe who gets in his way.

The base is from Back-2-Base ix

Goin' Rogue Part 2: more Bishkek 2nd recruits

I painted a few more Kalmyk 1st troopers, who after the demise of their army, were forcefully integrated into the Bishkek 2nd whose army I am modeling. The Kalmyk shoulder pads have a small patch of grey which distinguishes them from the original Bishkek troops who have dark brown on both sides.

I am still using up all the individual 1994 metal Imperial Guard models for this squad and hope to be able to have 10 that all look different. Right now I have nine and I am looking for that last one.
These models are an absolute joy to paint and they look great. I am not converting them at all. They have excellent detail and good character, they are really nice sculpts. All you IG players should hunt some down and paint them!

Here are the new recruits:

I am getting better at the small numbers

A heavy weapon squad with the big bolter. I used a see through flying base and sculpted the ground on there, making sure the carriage is sunken in the mud because of weight. The guy with the extra ammo is an awesome model.
Here's the squad so far. if anyone has any models of this range that are not showing and you want to give them a good home, let me know at mike.tess@charter.net. I have lots of stuff to trade.
Here is Bishkek 2nd so far (the Valkyrie is not pictured).

Hope you enjoy!

Guide to Happy Warhammer Trading

Everybody likes a good deal, and lets face it, this hobby isn't cheap.

I am always on the lookout for some good Warhammer deals, weather its on Craigslist, picking up an army that someones lost interest in, or on Ebay, looking for something poorly listed, or already built, for a fraction of the cost of going to GW.

Recently I have been enjoying trading on the Barter Bucket.

The Bucket is a bit different and can be a great way to find that little bit you are after without paying inflated online bits houses and getting screwed with "handling charges"

It is also a great place to trade some of your old stuff for some new recruits for your current army.

Since the Barter Bucket is for trading with other bloggers, we want to make sure that both parties have a good experience, and no one leaves a deal with any bad feelings.

There are a few different types of deals that go down.

One of those is a person looking for a few bits. What is the value of 5 plastic space marine helmets? Well, not much.

Most bits seekers would be happy to send off a self addressed stamped envelope to get a few bits they have been after. Perhaps they have a few bit that you could use.

Have you ever had a friend hand you some bits that you needed, no charge? I have.

A while back I saw an add from a blogger that posted an looking for a few specific plastic Chaos marine heads. I got his address and I put them in an envelope with a stamp, and sent it off. Less than a buck, it felt pretty good and I knew it was going to a good home with a simple message, "pay it forward".

Then there are the more complex deals. I have some Tau stuff and would like to trade for some Grey Knights. What is a fair deal?

Here is what I do to figure out a fair trade.

Figure out what you have. Count up everything and make a realistic assessment of its value to the person you will trade it to. I like to use the GW webstore as a guide for the value of the minis, this will give you a replacement cost. Now devalue according to condition. A poorly painted or assembled plastic mini is going to be worth less that a new one on the sprue. But a properly stripped down metal mini is about as good as a new one.

Now compare your items value with the value of the minis you are trading for. Is it close? If not, and your stuff has greater value, see if he will throw in a few more to make it a better deal. Don't be afraid to ask questions or even for pics to see what the condition is like, its better to ask than be disappointed later when the box shows up.

When you come to a fair trade, box everything up and send it off with an agreement on the shipping, perhaps your plastics are cheap to ship, so send them fast, while his metal minis are heavier, and will go a bit slower, so that the shipping costs are still about the same.

Most important is to have fun with it, and remember that you are helping out someone, somewhere, that is a lot like you. And treat each other as you would like to be treated.

Now go out here and make some good trades.

Please help us spread this great concept!

As you know we have hosted the Barter Bucket now for a couple of weeks. We haven't gotten any feedback, but I didn't expect that. The Barter Bucket is not so readers can communicate with US, it is there so they can talk to EACH OTHER. And in my heart I know that readers have been trading with each other. I myself have used the bucket at least 5 times (when still at FTW), every single time with success.

I believe the system of trading among blogging friends is ultimately preferable to the faceless transactions with greedy ebay sellers. Mind you, I have traded on Ebay over 350 times and whenever I really need something I go there. But the things I received with the Barter Bucket have been so cool, so personal and always with a friendly email and an extra model in the box. And it feels like I know the people that I email with about bitz. These are the same humans as I am: love the hobby, love the game, have thousands of extra plastic in the house; what is not to like?

So here's my request: please add the Barter Bucket as a picture with link onto your blog. The way we did it is
1. go to layout
2. add gadget
3. choose picture
4. hit edit when it shows up in the layout
5. give it a link

Here's the picture
(right click and save)
Here's the link (this always stays the same)

After all this, might I mention that Mik is doing this all for fun and we greatly appreciate his work.

We don't make any money on it. We just believe this is the RIGHT THING to do. We hope you agree. Let me know what you all think.

SCW Wanders off to WWII Battle Of Britain

Well, after seeing a post on the Wings of War WWI airplane card/miniatures game on John's Toy Soldiers blog.

I decided to check them out for something different to play. I ended up buying the WWII boxed set with rules and 4 minis, and later bought 2 more planes, a Messerschmidt and a Spitfire, so we had 2 of each for a game.

It was a simple game and very fun. With a pair of planes each we had 2 games of about 30 minutes each. You really only need 1 rules set has enough markers to play 4 planes at once.

A shot of the game table, a blanket over the table and some cotton clouds for looks.

Here a Bf-109 turns towards his wingman to stay out of a Spitfire's guns.

The plane packs come with maneuver cards , a stand and a prepainted 1/200 scale mini for about $13.

The rules sets come with the needed damage and special markers, and rules book, but the books can be found here for free.

The WWII series has only a few planes yet, but there is quite a few in the WWI series, which of course I will now be after to try also.

The Grande Old Dame from the Kalmyk Zone, Part 1

Imagine this.

The beloved Bishkek 2nd comes out of a terrible war in the Kalmyk Zone, taking with her the remnants of the Kalmyk 1st, a tattered and broken regiment, devastated by huge losses and defeat. It is decided that the Kalmyk soldiers are being absorbed into the Bishkek 2nd, before they land on Kartvelian, the desert planet that is being overrun by hostile insurgents.
The Kalmyk troops have low morale, so the brass decides to bring one of the few remaining tanks from the lost battle for their home planet to Kartvelian. The soldiers name it lovingly The Grande Old Dame. This tank becomes the symbol of survival and pride for the Kalmyk troops, as they lose their identity in a new and much larger regiment.

I am modeling the old guard models from 1994 into the Kalmyk regiment. They will all have a grey patch on their left shoulder pad, like this guy.
I have started work on the Grand Old Dame and I put together a quick tutorial on how I got her the way she looks. She is not done but the project is started. I have been wanting to do this for a while and finally got it together. Here's the step by step:

1. find an old Russ that's decently painted and give it a gloss coat
3. give it a coat of hairspray
4. give it a new camo pattern (really simple)
5. let it dry for 5 minutes and then start attacking it with warm water and a scrubber
6. for harder parts, let them soak in the water
7. the water makes the hairspray come off and reveal what's below. By doing it sparingly you can achieve a nice effect.
I on the other hand went WAY to crazy and came out of the battle with this Grande Old Dame. She is not finished by a long stretch, having to still finish up all the moving parts like barrels and tracks, but I love her already!

Try it out. It would work well on Ork or Nurgle Vehicles as well.

Mike
